Description
Alfred and Jessie Martinez of Monte Vista, Colorado in 1966. Photograph by Mansi Kern. In 1966, Kern wrote "Jessie Martinez was born in 1900 in Springer, New Mexico. She began playing the violin when she was ten years old. She taught herself. Her father was a very fine violin player. She learned many of the early dance melodies from him. She played at dances with her father many years ago. She has played at dances ever since, and at weddings. She plays at Taos Fiestas every July, in
the San Luis Valley, and many other places. She plays her father!s old violin - a Stradavarious violin (probably a German copy). Jessie is 66 years old.

"Alfred Martinez was born in Taos, New Mexico in 1894. He learned to play the harmonica within the last five years. He taught himself. He played and learned the old melodies from his wife, Jessie. When a boy, he learned to sing and play the Taos Indian songs and play the Indian drum. He has a natural talent and love for Indian songs and Spanish-Colonial dance music. He is active and young although he is 73 years old."
