Biography
Ramon Lopez grew up in Santa Fe and was always artistically inclined. He started out as a jewelry maker and later began woodcarving. His style echoes that of the New Mexican Spanish Colonial santeros, whose work had a distinctive roughness; Lopez achieves this texture by deliberately leaving some hammer marks and imperfections on his pieces. The jewelry he and his wife make are similarly influenced by the 19th century styles. He has won numerous awards at the Spanish Colonial Market. [source: Dana Everts 2/17/1988]
