Biography
Joseph Gutierrez is a basket maker from Santa Clara Pueblo. In the Tewa basket-making tradition, some of the red willow used to weave the baskets is stripped while the rest is left intact, creating alternating patterns on the finished product. He learned the art of basketry from a San Juan Pueblo man while in high school; this man tasked Gutierrez with teaching anyone else who wanted to learn, in order to perpetuate the tradition. Gutierrez has gone on to pass his skills to his own children and his apprentice, Francis Tafoya. [source: Dana Everts12/16/1989]
