Biography
As a trained alcohol and drug abuse counselor and a recovering alcoholic himself, Andrew Garcia started the San Juan Pueblo Indian Youth Dancers in an effort to provide an alternative to drug and alcohol abuse among the youth of the Pueblo. Through the program, the members learn traditional dances and songs in Tewa, which they are able to share with others as they travel for performances. Garcia and the rest of the group provide a supportive atmosphere to help at-risk youth while working to preserve their culture. [source: Dana Everts 7/8/1987]
